Male Brazilian Waxing FAQ
What areas are waxed in a male brazilian?
Standard Male Brazilian waxing includes the frontal pubic area (the mound) below the belly and about 2 inches where the upper thigh meets the pubic area; the shaft, scrotum and gluteal cleft/crevice including the area surrounding the anal opening. It is optional to leave a landing strip (patch of hair) above the shaft. Normally a brazilian is removal of all hairs but some men opt to just have the testicles and shaft done. Please make sure you communicate your preferences prior to your treatment. Brazilian waxes refer only to the pubic area, not other services like arm waxing and chest waxing.
Where did the term Brazilian Waxing come from?
As the name suggests, brazilian waxing originated from Brazil for women who wanted to wear the new thong bikinis. Brazilian wax became famous when it was introduced into the US when a hair removal salon called J. Sisters International Salon was opened in 1987. J. Sisters International Salon was opened in Manhattan, New York by seven Brazilian sisters Jocely, Jonice, Joyce, Janea, Jussara, Juracy and Judseia Padilha. However, the waxing of the genital areas is not new. Waxing of the genital areas has been prevalent for centuries in Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, Arabia, Turkey and Persia. Historically, the waxes were sugar-based and made with lemon.
Should I expect it to be a painful experience?
This truly depends on your pain threshold. Any pain felt is temporary as the hair is pulled but subsides right after. Because it is so quick, the pain subsides immediately and generally does not linger. This is done several times throughout the process and some areas are felt stronger than others and for some, not much pain at all. Each time you return for a waxing it becomes easier and less painful as the hairs become less resistive. Estheticians are not medical doctors so we cannot recommend taking anything but most people will take their favorite pain reliever. It is advised not to take aspirin as it thins the blood.
What should I do to prepare for my brazilian?
For your safety and for sanitary reasons it is important to be impeccably clean in your genitalia areas before a brazilian. Bacteria around your anal area can be easily spread to open pores resulting in an infection. Do not use a body scrub exfoliant (loofa or granular products) up to 4 days prior. Exfoliation thins the skin at the surface and waxing is already considered a form of exfoliation and waxing your skin at this point could potentially damage the skin. It is not advisable to tan your skin three days or less prior to a waxing. Tanning draws blood up to the surface and the skin is already sensitive so lifting, peeling, blistering and bleeding can occur. Please do not apply any creams or lotions to your genitals the day of service as wax will not adhere to lotions, oils or creams. Please read the section called WAXING CONTRAINDICATIONS. Not everyone can be waxed and if you have any of the conditions listed on the contraindications form, then it is advised, for your safety, not to proceed with a waxing service. If you have the opportunity, pack some sweats or loose clothing to put on after your waxing. The areas may be sensitive for a short period of time. If you have sensitive skin and break out easily due to certain lotions or creams, you may not be a good waxing candidate.
What can I expect with my first brazilian?
You can expect complete professionalism and a clinical service from start to finish. Gloves are worn through the whole process and all instruments have been thoroughly sterilized and sanitized. You will be informed of the process during the service and information will be provided for post care. You will be on the esthetic bed with a towel to drape yourself until the procedure starts. The waxes are premium and quality, high grade pine resin from Belgium. The resin helps to desensitize the skin. This wax inhibits the growth of bacteria. You will be advised to purchase 100% Jojoba oil and to apply to all waxed areas for the first 24 hours. This helps to heal and hydrate the areas.
How long should the hair be for a waxing?
Whether you have shaved or not, the wax cannot adhere to any hairs less than 1/4″ in growth. 1/2″ growth is ideal. Any long hairs will be trimmed prior to your service.
How soon will the hair grow back and what about maintenance?
This all depends on your hair growth. If you typically grow hair back quickly on your legs or underarms, then expect your brazilian appointments to be more frequent. Your first wax will grow a bit faster than subsequent waxes and you will possibly notice re-growth in 10 to 14 days. By the third regular wax (done approximately every 4 to 6 weeks) you will notice that your hair is finer and not as dense. The re-growth will be slowed so you will feel fairly hair free most of the time. Some have reported that continued brazilian waxing has decreased the amount and the thickness of the hair in general. This would not be uncommon as the papilla (root ball of the follicle) is being disturbed and uprooted so in the process may even permanently deaden the bulb preventing a hair follicle from forming. When the hairs start to grow back, it can feel a little bumpy, perhaps rough. The hairs are attempting to come to the surface. It is not a good idea to scratch the hairs coming to the surface. You can apply Jojoba oil to help with the dryness and itching to help calm and hydrate the skin. Dry skin can also contribute to ingrown hairs as the hairs can’t make their way through a layer of dry skin and therefore turn under. Any disturbance can turn the hair sideways forming a lesion just under the skin, much like a pimple. Using an antibacterial over the counter topical ointment (such as Neosporin) can help to heal the lesions but this is just a recommendation and an esthetician does not prescribe medications and anything that looks questionable should be seen a doctor. If you are prone to ingrown hairs you may want to book an ingrown hair treatment in between waxings. It’s a great treatment to help exfoliate and condition the skin.
Why do men do brazilians and for what reasons?
A brazilian can be done for many reasons to reduce chaffing for sports such as cycling, swimming, running, dancing, performance arts, martial arts, art posing, etc. Other reasons can be personal and for pleasure. Perhaps you sweat excessively and removing hair from your genitalia can allow the area to better breathe and increase circulation of air. Whatever your reason, it doesn’t matter. The choice and sensation after a brazilian is very individual. Here at Simply Mia’s, Mia has clients from all walks of life including professionals such as lawyers, doctors, software engineers and government employees, married, single, gay. Whatever your lifestyle is, the freedom of hair from the genitalia is liberating and just feels great.
What concerns should I have with a brazilian?
This is a common question and for some may be a concern, perhaps even an embarrassment. The male genitalia has a normal adrenal response due to the warmth of the wax. There is some manipulation as the wax is being applied and also during the removal of the wax. There is no massage with oils with this treatment. This response from the body is normal and should not be considered a sexual one.The entire procedure is strictly sanitary and clinical. Your esthetician has been trained in the anatomy and biology of the skin and you can be assured that you will be receiving a professional and clinical service in a safe and sterile environment.
What is considered inappropriate?
Sometimes, but rarely, an inappropriate email or phone call is received regarding the services provided. To ask impertinent and sexual questions that do not relate to hair removal or other services on her price list is very disrespectful and considered sexual harassment. Many men find it very embarrassing to go to a busy spa environment full of women and prefer the privacy and convenience of coming to Simply Mia’s to receive a professional and clinical treatment. Please remember that an esthetician’s chosen career is no different than a female nurse or proctologist. Mia has a wonderful clientele list with people from all walks of life and many have been seeing Mia for years. Simply Mia’s is fully equipped with an alarm system for both fire and theft, along with a panic button for immediate police response in the event of an emergency. Monitors are set up in different areas of the house for safety reasons. There is no access to any areas of the house other than the treatment room and central areas without triggering the alarm.
Can you be assured you are getting a professional male Brazilian waxing service from Simply Mia’s?
Waxing is more common for women than for men but more and more men are wanting to get brazilian waxing too. Simply Mia’s offers a private location free of wait lines or waiting rooms at a local spa. The estheticis room is fully equipped. All equipment and tools are cleaned then sanitized. All tools are also sanitized under a UV light (which kills bacteria) for your protection and under WA safety, sterile and sanitation guidelines. You can be assured you are receiving a professional and experienced service. The treatment is very clinical. Simply Mia’s business licenses are displayed in the treatment room. All measures are taken to insure your comfort and concerns are addressed.
Why would you want to go to Simply Mia’s instead of the local spa?
Finding a good, reputable and experienced esthetician can be the tricky. Many estheticians do not want to wax men in the private areas. Many spas have a high turn over rate so you may not always have the same esthetician. At Simply Mia’s, you will always receive your service from the owner, Mia. There are no waiting lines or need for embarrassment while you wait for your service. There is plenty of parking out front. You will be greeted and attended to immediately. The service will never be rushed because all appointments are booked to take as much time as needed. Attention to detail is provided and the goal is to provide a thorough, comfortable and quality treatment. You will find Mia to be personable, engaging and knowledgeable while being treated in a comfortable atmosphere. “Thank you and I hope you will become a Simply Mia’s client and book your appointment today…” Mia
